Programs - Storm Water Run off

STORM WATER RUN OFF

MISSION

Inspire all lake residents to serve as lake stewards through cooperative partnerships with county, state, and local agencies. Encourage landowners to apply “Best Practice” methods to safeguard water quality.

COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIP

Currently the committee consists of Ken Janson, Larry Gregg, Scott Lucas, and Madonna Williams. Anyone who has an interest in resolving lake issues is welcome to join the committee.

At lake level we are at the bottom of the hill. Runoff flowing down the watershed provides a large percentage of needed water to the lake. On its way to the lake the water carries nutrients from nearby farms, sediments rich in phosphorous from lawns, eroded shorelines, and construction sites, chemicals from detergents, fertilizers and septic systems. Our wetlands slow and filter runoff flows. Wetland overflows drain to the lake. Together, all these nutrients contribute to murkier water, algae blooms, and/or excess weed growth and therefore need to be controlled.

See Protecting your Waterfront Investment, Ten Simple Stewardship Practices, a UW-Extension publication which can be accessed on this website on the “Links” page.

Our primary objective: Reduce the delivery of pollutants to the lake, especially phosphorus and sediment originating from row-cropped farm fields, chemical fertilizers, failing septic systems, shoreline erosion, construction sites, and existing suburban areas within the outlying watershed.
